J. I. Rodale was the creator of the popular health
magazine called Prevention. In 1971 at the age of 72, he
appeared on the Dick Cavett show, where he boasted in front
of cameras that doctors had given him only six months to
live 30 years ago. Because of his healthy lifestyle espoused
in his magazine, he was sure he'd live to be 100. Later in
the show it appeared as if he had fallen asleep on the set,
and Cavett chuckled about it…..
until he realized the man was dead. The
show never aired.
Salvador Dali, eccentric painter, bought a large castle
in Spain for his wife. In one of the rooms, there stood a
rather ugly, old-fashioned radiator, so his wife asked him
if he would paint a screen for it. He did. The screen
depicted in realistic detail…..
the radiator it was hiding.
A fishing competition off the coast of Sandwich had to be
called off on October 20, 1946. The freighter Helena Mogeska
had broken up and beached nearby, and all her cargo floated
into the bay, making fishing impossible that day. The cargo
consisted of…..
crates full of canned fish.
Sculptor Lorado Taft was working on a piece that required
the effect of wind-blown robes. Unable to get the effect he
desired, he went out to walk one windy day and found himself
walking on the opposite side of the street from two nuns. He
followed them for some time taking notes on the way their
robes swirled in the wind. Then he noticed with alarm that
an unsavory-looking character was following very closely
behind the nuns. He crossed the street to come to their aid
and found himself face to face with…..
another sculptor.
